The International Center for Transitional Justice (ICTJ) is seeking a Major Gifts Officer to join its Development team in New York City. This position is designed for an experienced fundraising professional dedicated to advancing human rights, accountability, and institutional reform globally.

ICTJ is an international non-profit organization specializing in transitional justice. It works across societies and borders to address the causes and consequences of massive human rights violations, affirm victims’ dignity, combat impunity, and promote responsive institutions.

Position Overview

The Major Gifts Officer will be instrumental in expanding philanthropic support for ICTJ’s mission. The role will focus on identifying, cultivating, soliciting, and stewarding major individual donors and family foundations, while also supporting the Director of Development in managing relationships with top-tier donors and prospects. The position operates on a hybrid schedule and requires legal authorization to work in the United States.

Key Responsibilities

The Major Gifts Officer will manage a portfolio of individual donors and prospects with the potential to contribute between $5,000 and $25,000 annually, encompassing the full donor lifecycle.

Portfolio Management

The officer will oversee and grow a portfolio of individual donors and prospects, guiding them through discovery, engagement, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship phases. Personalized engagement strategies will be developed and executed.

Donor Engagement & Events

The officer will launch and implement an annual donor engagement strategy under the supervision of the Director of Development. This includes planning and producing annual benefit and cultivation events, collaborating with communications colleagues on collateral development and event execution, and establishing meaningful donor touchpoints through meetings and tailored ICTJ content delivery.

Strategic Support & Collaboration

The Major Gifts Officer will assist the Director of Development in managing top donors and foundation prospects. Prospect research, rating, and prioritization will be conducted to grow the fundraising pipeline. Detailed donor records and contact reports will be maintained in the CRM system, and donor interactions and engagement strategies will be tracked.

Cross-Functional Coordination

The officer will partner with program and finance teams to prepare proposals, stewardship reports, and donor presentations. Collaboration with executive leadership on cultivation and solicitation strategies will also be required, along with supporting donor briefings and correspondence.

Additional Duties

The officer will undertake other development-related tasks and projects as assigned, contributing to organizational fundraising goals and strategy implementation.

Qualifications and Requirements

A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution is required, with a Master’s degree preferred. Candidates should have a minimum of four years of fundraising experience, with experience in international affairs or related sectors being advantageous. Demonstrated success in managing donor portfolios and achieving fundraising targets is essential.

Technical proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite is required, along with experience using CRM systems such as Raiser’s Edge. Familiarity with prospect research tools like Kindsight, iWave, and Candid is also expected.

Core competencies include the ability to independently manage projects and collaborate within a team, work effectively in complex, fast-paced environments, and possess strong organizational skills and the ability to meet deadlines. Excellent written and oral communication skills, sound judgment, and discretion when handling confidential information are also necessary, along with enthusiasm, creativity, and a commitment to ICTJ’s mission.

Compensation and Benefits

The salary range for this position is $65,000–$85,000 annually, commensurate with experience.
