South Africa defeated India by 76 runs in Ahmedabad on Sunday, ending India’s 12-match winning streak at the T20 World Cup and marking the opening Super Eights match in Group 1. This result also represents India’s heaviest defeat in T20 World Cup history.
Marco Jansen took 4-22, while Keshav Maharaj claimed 3-24, exposing India’s fragile batting lineup. South Africa captain Aiden Markram praised the bowling group’s adaptability to the pitch conditions.
South Africa reached a total of 7-187, propelled by a counter-attacking 63 from David Miller and a late surge from Tristan Stubbs, who remained unbeaten on 44 off 24 balls. Earlier, South Africa had stumbled to 3-20 before Miller and Dewald Brevis (45) formed a 97-run partnership. Jasprit Bumrah took 3-15 for India.
India was all out for 111 in 18.5 overs. Marco Markram immediately dismissed Ishan Kishan to start the innings. Abhishek Sharma briefly energized the crowd with a four, but was soon removed by Jansen. The innings deteriorated further with wickets falling consistently, including Corbin Bosch dismissing Washington Sundar and Suryakumar Yadav. Maharaj then took three wickets in a single over, effectively ending India’s hopes. Shivam Dube contributed 42, but it proved insufficient.
India’s poor net run rate will be a concern as the Super Eights progress. To advance to the semi-finals, India will likely need to win their remaining matches against Zimbabwe and the West Indies. India captain Suryakumar Yadav acknowledged the team’s struggles, particularly the loss of wickets during the power play.
The match was a rematch of the 2024 T20 World Cup final in Barbados, which India had won. India’s previous defeat in the tournament occurred in the 2022 semi-final against England.
