Recent Fatalities and Violence

Two additional deaths have been reported, bringing the total to at least ten. In Qom, a grenade explosion killed one man; security officials stated he intended to attack civilians. Videos circulating online showed fires in the city. In Harsin, a member of the Basij, a volunteer force affiliated with the Revolutionary Guard, was killed in an attack involving firearms and knives.

Geographic Spread of Protests

Demonstrations have now occurred in over 100 locations across 22 of Iran’s 31 provinces. This widespread participation highlights the breadth of public discontent.

Government Response and Economic Factors

Iran’s civilian government, led by President Masoud Pezeshkian, has attempted to engage in dialogue with protesters. However, Pezeshkian has acknowledged limitations in addressing the crisis, particularly given the country’s deteriorating economic situation.

A significant decline in the value of the Iranian rial, now trading at approximately 1.4 million to the US dollar, has fueled the unrest. This currency devaluation has contributed to rising prices, unemployment, and a general decline in living standards for many Iranians.
