KenTrade Efficiency Boost Could Benefit Kenyan Competitiveness

Written by on January 14, 2026

Kenya’s government is emphasizing the importance of trade facilitation as a key driver of economic growth. A recent meeting between Chief of Staff Felix Koskei and the newly appointed Kenya Trade Network Agency (KenTrade) Board highlighted expectations for improved performance and accountability.

National Electronic Single Window System

The discussion centered on the National Electronic Single Window System, a digital platform connecting over 40 government agencies involved in trade approvals, licensing, and regulatory clearances. This system is considered crucial for Kenya’s competitiveness, addressing long-standing challenges for exporters and importers related to paperwork, delays, and overlapping controls.

Digital Trade Infrastructure

The government views digital trade infrastructure as equally vital as traditional infrastructure like ports, highways, and railway lines. Koskei’s focus on the platform reflects a broader shift in government strategy, positioning KenTrade as a central component of Kenya’s economic strategy.

Economic Benefits and Regional Competition

Increased efficiency and coordination through the system are expected to lower business costs, reduce turnaround times at ports and borders, and bolster investor confidence. Kenya faces increasing regional competition from countries like Rwanda, Tanzania, and Ethiopia, all striving to simplify trade procedures. Any delays in Kenya’s digital trade systems could threaten its position as East Africa’s primary commercial gateway.

Accountability and Transparency

Koskei stressed the importance of accountability and zero tolerance for corruption. Trade facilitation agencies operate at a critical intersection of private sector finances, government authority, and regulatory oversight. Weak governance could lead to misuse of digital platforms, undermining their intended purpose. Koskei indicated that KenTrade will be subject to close scrutiny, with limited tolerance for system failures or abuse.
