Kenya and China concluded the 2025 Kenya–China Culture and Tourism Season on Tuesday, marking a period of enhanced cultural cooperation and people-to-people exchanges. The closing ceremony, held in Nairobi and coinciding with Chinese New Year celebrations, acknowledged the initiative’s success in strengthening ties between the two nations.
The Culture and Tourism Season featured a range of events designed to engage audiences in both Kenya and China. These included the opening ceremony, live coverage of the Wildebeest Migration, the China Animated Film Festival, the Kenya Wushu National Championship, the Africa Championship of Chinese Cuisine, and the China–Kenya Friendship Games. Organizers reported that these events increased cultural visibility in areas such as sports, film, cuisine, and heritage.
Chinese Ambassador to Kenya Guo Haiyan described the Season as a “vivid demonstration” of the strengthened China–Kenya relationship, referencing President William Ruto’s State Visit to China in April 2025. Ambassador Guo emphasized the program’s contribution to building a China–Kenya community with a shared future. Principal Secretary for Culture, the Arts and Heritage, Ummi Bashir, echoed this sentiment, noting the initiative’s role in solidifying cultural cooperation across various sectors and reinforcing Nairobi’s position as a regional hub.
The Culture and Tourism Season yielded tangible outcomes, including training programs for Kenyan professionals. A total of 131 Kenyan officials and professionals in culture, heritage, tourism, sports, and the creative economy received training in China. China’s ongoing provision of scholarships to Kenyan students was also highlighted as a key element in strengthening human capital development.
Ongoing collaboration in heritage and research was cited as a significant achievement. The Sino-Kenya Paleolithic Archaeological Project around Lake Baringo and Lake Bogoria has produced internationally recognized findings related to human origins and has bolstered scientific cooperation. Other milestones included a Kenya–China media content-sharing agreement, the launch of a Film Festival, cooperation through Confucius Institutes in Kenyan universities, partnerships in museology, and initiatives connecting Kenyan and Chinese tea masters to develop joint products for export markets.
The year 2026 will mark the 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and Africa. Ambassador Guo announced that 2026 will be designated the “China–Africa Year of People-to-People Exchanges.” China reaffirmed its commitment to deepening mutually beneficial cooperation, fostering traditional friendship, and providing opportunities for the international community.
