Kenya Assumes Control of Mombasa Stadium AFCON Construction

The National Government of Kenya is preparing to assume control of the Mombasa Municipal Stadium construction project. This move aims to expedite completion of the stadium in advance of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), which Kenya is co-hosting in the East African region.
Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Shariff Nassir recently met with Principal Secretary for Sports Elijah Mwangi and Defence PS Patrick Mariru to discuss the transfer of responsibilities and associated technicalities. The discussions included assessing the current state of construction, estimated to be 40 percent complete, and addressing the complexities of taking over a project with an existing contract.
Project Financial Assessment
The Mombasa County government will provide the national government with final project accounts within one week. This will detail the project’s current cost and the percentage of work completed, facilitating the onboarding of a new contractor by the national government.
Stadium Capacity and Features
The planned 15,000-seater facility is intended to meet international standards and serve as a venue for AFCON matches. It will include a FIFA-standard pitch, canopy, modern terraces, a VIP pavilion, and advanced security and sound systems. A presidential pavilion is also planned. The stadium’s low altitude makes it a suitable alternative venue to facilities in Nairobi.
Role in Sports Tourism and Talent Development
Officials anticipate the completed stadium will contribute to the growth of Mombasa County as a sports tourism hub and foster talent development initiatives in the Coast region. Additional facilities are being developed in Mombasa County to serve as training grounds, complementing the stadium’s role as an AFCON venue.
Construction Timeline and Previous Usage
Construction of the stadium is expected to be completed within one year. The Mombasa Municipal Stadium was last used in 2015, hosting a match between Gor Mahia and Bandari. Since then, the project has faced construction delays.
Government Initiative and KDF Involvement
The stadium project is a priority under a presidential directive focused on accelerated sports development. The Defence Forces (KDF) are currently involved in the project and have committed to delivering it on time and to the highest standards, citing a unique design that will be built upon.
