Kenya Dental Association Seeks Suspension of Oral Health Degree

The Kenya Dental Association (KDA) has petitioned parliament for the immediate suspension of the Bachelor of Science in Oral Health programme. The petition, released on March 4, 2026, also requests a full investigation into the programme’s accreditation.

Concerns Regarding Programme Approval

The KDA has expressed concerns about regulatory gaps in the approval, development, and rollout of the Bachelor of Science in Oral Health programme. The Association stated that professional stakeholders were not consulted prior to the course’s introduction. They characterized this lack of consultation as a significant regulatory lapse, rather than a minor procedural oversight.

Definition of Oral Health Practitioner

The KDA clarified that the term “Oral Health Practitioner” is generally used to describe dental surgeons, dental practitioners, and their clinical support teams. However, it is not a distinct statutory title. According to the Medical Practitioners and Dentists Act (Cap 253), there is no legally recognized or registrable professional cadre designated as an Oral Health Practitioner.

Petition Demands

As part of its petition, the KDA has requested that the Ministry of Education suspend the programme’s implementation pending a comprehensive investigation. The Association also urged the Commission for University Education to consult with professional stakeholders to prevent confusion, duplication, or the creation of unlawful professional training pathways.

Commitment to Professional Standards

The KDA reaffirmed its commitment to defending the integrity of dental education in Kenya and protecting the public from potential risks associated with irregular training programmes. The Association emphasized that public safety is non-negotiable and regulatory clarity is mandatory.
