Kenya Enhances Coastal Cancer Treatment with New Technology

Kenya’s government announced new measures to improve cancer care, including the addition of a Linear Accelerator (LINAC) machine at the Coast General Cancer Centre in Mombasa. Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale made the announcement from the Coast General Teaching and Referral Hospital.

Increased Radiotherapy Capacity

The Coast General Cancer Centre will receive an additional LINAC machine, bringing the total to two. This will effectively double the facility’s daily radiotherapy capacity from approximately 70 patients to 140. The facility serves Mombasa and surrounding regions, including parts of Lower Eastern.

Improved Supply Chain for Imaging Reagents

The government plans to address supply chain issues by centralizing the procurement of imaging reagents through the Kenya Medical Supplies Authority (KEMSA). These reagents are essential for cancer staging and monitoring, and shortages have previously disrupted diagnosis and treatment. Centralized procurement aims to stabilize supplies and improve planning at regional cancer centers.

Expanded Social Health Authority Benefits

The oncology benefits package under the Social Health Authority (SHA) will be increased from KSh 500,000 to KSh 800,000 per person or household. This expansion acknowledges the financial burden cancer places on Kenyan families, many of whom face debt or asset sales following a diagnosis. The increased coverage aims to mitigate this risk.

Focus on Cervical Cancer Awareness

The announcement was made during Cervical Cancer Awareness Month. Cervical cancer remains a leading cause of cancer-related deaths among Kenyan women, despite being largely preventable and treatable with early detection and intervention.
