Kenya officials face claims of police interference in politics

Recent incidents of violence linked to political maneuvering in the Mt Kenya region have intensified a power struggle, with claims of politically motivated police transfers surfacing. The situation escalated following an event at a church in Nyeri County.

Othaya Church Incident

On Sunday, teargas was deployed at ACK Witima Church in Othaya, Nyeri County, during a service attended by former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua. The incident resulted in injuries to congregants and drew widespread condemnation. Former Deputy President Gachagua has asserted that the event was not a random act of violence but a deliberate operation sanctioned by the state and involving police officers.

Allegations of Police Transfers

Claims of misuse and politically driven transfers of police officers have become central to the escalating power dynamics in the Mt Kenya region. These allegations are occurring amidst growing concerns about political realignments in anticipation of the 2027 elections.
