Kenya Opposition Claims Intimidation, Unites Mt Kenya for 2027

Kenya’s United Opposition leaders convened on Sunday, February 1, 2026, at ACK Gitugi in Mathioya Constituency, Murang’a County. During the church service, they voiced concerns regarding alleged government intimidation and announced plans to present a unified presidential candidate for the 2027 General Election.

Allegations of Political Intimidation

Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) leader Rigathi Gachagua alleged the existence of a government-linked covert unit, identified as “Sierra,” comprised of twelve individuals based in Nairobi. Gachagua claimed this unit was responsible for the disturbances at ACK Witima Church in Othaya last Sunday. He stated that the opposition would not tolerate further intimidation, regardless of any arrests made. Gachagua emphasized the opposition’s commitment to forming an alternative government and highlighted the importance of the Mt. Kenya region in this effort.

Opposition Unity and Presidential Candidate

The United Opposition leaders affirmed their commitment to fielding a single candidate to challenge President William Ruto in the 2027 election. Gachagua stated that Mt. Kenya would support this candidate, accusing the President of attempting to isolate the region. Fred Matiang’i, Jubilee deputy party leader and presidential aspirant, echoed the call for unity and warned against provoking citizens.

Economic and Healthcare Concerns

Matiang’i accused the government of misappropriating funds intended for education and healthcare. He outlined proposed reforms under an opposition administration, including the reinstatement of free primary and secondary education, the restoration of the Linda Mama program, and addressing issues within the Social Health Authority. He stated the opposition’s goal is to improve the country’s condition.

Prospects for the 2027 Election

Wiper Party leader and former Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka asserted that President Ruto would not secure a second term if the opposition maintains a united front.
