Kenya Praised by WADA for Anti-Doping Efforts

Kenya has received recognition from the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) for progress made in implementing corrective actions following a recent audit. A high-level WADA delegation met with Sports Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya in Nairobi to discuss the ongoing efforts.

WADA Commends Kenya’s Progress

WADA Director for Africa, Rodney Swigelaar, acknowledged the Kenyan government’s support for the Anti-Doping Agency of Kenya (ADAK). He emphasized the importance of Kenya’s anti-doping program aligning with the World Anti-Doping Code to reflect success in both sport and athletics globally.

Government Reaffirms Commitment

Sports Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya stated that Kenya is dedicated to aligning with WADA’s recommendations. He affirmed a commitment to building a robust, transparent, and integrity-driven anti-doping system that meets international standards. Mvurya welcomed WADA’s commendation of Kenya’s progress in implementing corrective action plans and reviewing legislation.

Expansion of Anti-Doping Program

The government plans to expand the Anti-Doping Program to Other Sports Disciplines (OSD) beyond athletics. This expansion aims to ensure equity, integrity, and comprehensive protection of clean sport across all sporting codes. Additional resources have been allocated to strengthen governance, intelligence, investigations, and risk-based testing capacity within these disciplines.

Ongoing Reforms and Initiatives

Kenya is implementing targeted reforms, including adopting updated policies, increasing sensitization and education, securing dedicated funding, and streamlining governance and staffing structures. These measures are intended to enhance the effectiveness and accountability of the anti-doping program.
