Kenya has opened its draft artificial intelligence (AI) policy for public consultation, marking another step in the country’s AI strategy.
The Ministry of Information, Communications and the digital Economy is leading the consultation, inviting academia, civil society, industry, researchers, startups, government institutions and other stakeholders to submit their views.
The draft policy forms part of Kenya’s National AI Strategy (2025-2030), which aims to guide the development, adoption, deployment and governance of AI and other emerging technologies.
Speaking in Nairobi on Tuesday as the consultation opened, John Tanui, principal secretary for the State Department for ICT and the Digital Economy, said stakeholder input would help shape the final policy.
“These contributions will help shape a trusted, inclusive and innovation-driven AI ecosystem that advances Kenya’s digital transformation and global competitiveness,” Tanui said.
He urged stakeholders to review the draft policy and submit their comments by 4 August.
The ministry said the policy aims to promote innovation, strengthen infrastructure and human capital, support sustainable development, and enhance Kenya’s economic resilience and strategic autonomy.
The consultation fulfils the Constitution of Kenya’s requirement for public participation in policy-making.
