Kenya tightens age verification amid Athletics cheating concerns

Athletics Kenya (AK) has affirmed its commitment to ensuring only legitimate athletes represent Kenya in international age-group competitions. This assurance comes as World Athletics intensifies investigations into age cheating and implements stricter verification protocols.

The measures are being introduced in response to ongoing global concerns regarding age manipulation in junior athletics.

Stricter Age Verification Measures

World Athletics is implementing stringent measures to verify athletes’ ages beyond any reasonable doubt. Athletics Kenya Youth Development Director Barnabas Korir stated that even with authentic age documentation, proof of the exact age will be required.

Age verification will no longer rely on a single document, such as a birth certificate, passport, or identification card. For athletes aged 18, additional verification steps will be implemented as Kenya prepares for the World Under-20 Championships.

Focus on Record Consistency

The verification process is shifting towards examining the consistency of an athlete’s records over time. Officials will assess whether presented documentation aligns with records from the athlete’s early years.

Athletics Kenya is strengthening its internal vetting processes to align with World Athletics requirements. This is intended to prevent post-competition sanctions, including the potential stripping of medals.

Accountability and Prevention

Accountability for age verification extends to athletes, parents, coaches, and schools. Maintaining proper documentation from an early age is emphasized as a crucial preventative measure.
