Kenyan Runner Wins Nagoya Marathon, Earns Ksh12 Million

Sheila Chepkirui of Kenya secured a second consecutive victory at the Nagoya Women’s Marathon in Japan on Sunday. The race took place in Nagoya, a city where Chepkirui previously achieved success.

Chepkirui finished the race in 2:21:54, securing first place. Sayaka Sato of Japan finished second with a time of 2:21:56, and Ainalem Desta of Ethiopia took third place in 2:22:37.

Chepkirui’s Performance and Expectations

Chepkirui, who won the 2024 New York Marathon, previously recorded a time of 2:20:40 in 2025. She had hoped to achieve a faster time this year but was unable to dip below 2:20. Prior to the race, Chepkirui stated her intention to aim for a time of 2:20 or under, dependent on weather conditions, and noted a focus on gym work in her training regimen.

Financial Rewards

The winner of the Nagoya Marathon receives 15 million Japanese Yen, equivalent to approximately $95,000 or Ksh12.2 million. This prize money represents a significant earning for Chepkirui.

The Nagoya Marathon is recognized as the world’s largest women-only marathon. The 2026 edition is projected to feature around 20,000 participants.
