Kenya’s Anti-Doping Efforts Receive WADA Approval

The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) has acknowledged Kenya’s progress in addressing corrective actions stemming from a recent audit. A high-level WADA delegation met with Kenyan officials in Nairobi to discuss the ongoing efforts.
Sports Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya received the WADA delegation, led by Rodney Swigelaar, Director of Africa, at Talanta Plaza. The discussions focused on Kenya’s commitment to anti-doping compliance and the implementation of WADA’s recommendations.
Government Support for Anti-Doping Agency of Kenya
WADA Director, Africa, Rodney Swigelaar, commended the Kenyan government’s support for the Anti-Doping Agency of Kenya (ADAK), highlighting its importance in maintaining compliance with international standards.
Commitment to Anti-Doping Reforms
CS Mvurya reaffirmed Kenya’s dedication to aligning with WADA’s recommendations, aiming to establish a robust, transparent, and integrity-driven anti-doping system. He welcomed WADA’s commendation of Kenya’s progress in implementing corrective action plans and reviewing legislation to ensure full alignment with the World Anti-Doping Code.
Expansion of Anti-Doping Programs
Mvurya emphasized ADAK’s commitment to sustaining progress and strengthening institutional compliance. The government plans to expand the Anti-Doping Program to Other Sports Disciplines (OSD) beyond athletics, ensuring equity and comprehensive protection of clean sport across all sporting codes. Additional resources have been allocated to enhance governance, intelligence, investigations, and risk-based testing capacity within these disciplines.
Ongoing Reforms and Sensitization
Kenya is implementing targeted reforms, including adopting policies to align with the revised compliance code, increasing sensitization and education to promote compliance, securing dedicated funding, and streamlining governance and staffing structures.
WADA’s Perspective
Swigelaar stated that WADA believes Kenya’s success in its anti-doping program should reflect its achievements in sports and athletics globally, expressing satisfaction with the government’s commitment and the collaboration of stakeholders to ensure the program aligns with the anti-doping code.
