Kiambu County Governor Kimani Wamatangi received a unanimous vote of confidence from the Senate’s Public Accounts Committee, according to recent reports. The committee acknowledged a significant increase in the county’s own-source revenue, doubling from Sh2.79 billion to Sh5.45 billion.
Own-Source Revenue and County Governance
Counties rely on own-source revenue (OSR) to supplement funding allocated by the national government. OSR includes fees such as business permits and parking charges. Concerns often arise regarding the transparency of OSR collection and potential misuse of funds.
Kiambu County’s Revenue Growth and Infrastructure Development
The Senate’s Public Accounts Committee highlighted that Kiambu County’s increased OSR has demonstrably impacted infrastructure and services. The county has reportedly constructed six level 4 hospitals and 28 level 3 hospitals, ensuring that residents have access to healthcare facilities within a five-kilometer radius.
Early Childhood Development Education (ECDE) Expansion
In the past financial year, over 220 ECDE classrooms were built in Kiambu County, adding to more than 300 constructed previously. This initiative has resulted in approximately two new ECDE classrooms in each sub-location, the lowest administrative unit of governance.
Addressing Challenges and Maintaining Progress
While acknowledging the progress, the report suggests that corruption remains a challenge in Kiambu County, though the leadership has reportedly worked to reduce it. The report also urges continued vigilance and encourages residents to prioritize the common good over personal interests. Specific concerns were raised regarding issues in the Theta area and potential interference with investors in Tatu City. The report concludes by emphasizing the importance of ensuring hospitals are adequately equipped and staffed, and that attention is given to other sectors beyond healthcare.
