Spotify data indicates a rising prominence of Kenyan artists among young listeners, alongside continued popularity of international musicians. Since entering the Kenyan market in 2021, Spotify has become a leading platform for digital music consumption, particularly among Gen Z audiences.
Popular International Artists
Kenyan users have consistently streamed global superstars over the past five years. Drake, Chris Brown, Future, Burna Boy, and Travis Scott are among the most frequently played artists on the platform within the country.
Evolving Musical Tastes
Kenya’s music scene is experiencing a cultural shift as young listeners shape a distinct soundscape. This involves blending global hits with local talent and viral trends. Amapiano, originating from South Africa, has seen a significant surge in popularity, with streams increasing by over 1,400 percent between 2021 and 2025.
Other genres also demonstrate considerable growth, including gospel/praise (up 1,103 percent), R&B (up 737 percent), Afrobeats (up 680 percent), and hip-hop/rap (up 520 percent) during the same period.
User-Generated Playlists and Social Media Influence
Kenyan listeners are actively curating and sharing music. Since Spotify’s launch, over 9 million user-generated playlists have been created. The average listener streams music from 124 different artists monthly. Social media platforms, particularly TikTok, influence trends, often transforming lesser-known tracks into popular songs through dance challenges and meme clips.
Emerging Kenyan Artists
Alongside international stars, Kenyan artists are gaining visibility in streaming data. Tracks such as “Inauma” by Bien, “Aki Sioni” by Njerae, “Beta” by Mutoriah, and “Sina Noma” by Charisma have been among the most streamed songs in Kenya over the past five years.
