Kenya’s stadiums assessed for 2027 Africa Cup of Nations

The Local Organising Committee (LOC) for the Pamoja Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2027 has concluded a two-day technical assessment of football pitches in Kenya. The assessment was conducted in collaboration with Aaron Mark Cross, a Pitch Management Expert from the Confederation of African Football (CAF).

Venue Inspections

Six major venues across the country were inspected, including Talanta City Stadium, Nyayo National Stadium, Moi Sports Centre Kasarani, Ulinzi Sports Complex, Utalii Grounds, and the Kenya Academy of Sports training facilities. The assessment focused on the quality, maintenance, and readiness of the pitches to host international-standard matches.

Assessment Details

The assessment examined turf quality, drainage, pitch dimensions, and player safety measures. LOC chairperson Nicholas Musonye emphasized the importance of the exercise, stating that these assessments are critical in ensuring all venues meet CAF’s standards. The findings will guide upgrades and maintenance interventions to meet international requirements and maintain optimal condition for local league matches and future tournaments.

Planned Stadium Upgrades

Following the HSBC tournament this weekend, Kasarani and Nyayo stadiums are scheduled for upgrades. Nyayo Stadium is set to receive a canopy, while the playing surface at Kasarani will be replaced. This will likely result in disruptions to local league fixtures as matches are moved from their regular venues.

Long-Term Benefits

LOC officials stated that the pitch enhancement plans will have long-term benefits for Kenyan football, supporting local leagues, youth tournaments, and training programs. The LOC is coordinating with CAF, the Ministry of Sports, football clubs, and other stakeholders to ensure seamless delivery.

Preparation Progress

The completion of the CAF-led technical assessments marks a significant milestone in Kenya’s preparations for the Pamoja AFCON, signaling the country’s commitment to hosting a world-class continental football event. The LOC’s broader strategy focuses on world-class facilities, logistics, and operational readiness.
