Opposition leaders allege a civilian death during a political rally in Kitengela. The incident occurred on February 15, and leaders are accusing police and hired groups of using violence against peaceful attendees.
According to a joint press statement released on X on February 16, 2026, by Siaya County Governor James Orengo, a confrontation in Kitengela resulted in the death of Vincent Ayomo. Ayomo, described as a garage worker, was reportedly attending the political rally peacefully. The leaders condemned the alleged state-sponsored violence and expressed condolences to Ayomo’s family, stating he “tragically lost his life in the fight for a better Kenya.” They asserted that Ayomo committed no crime and did not provoke the police, and vowed to seek justice and accountability for his death.
The statement further placed responsibility for the incident on President William Ruto and Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen, alleging they directed the actions of police and hired groups. Leaders claimed the government prioritized repression over addressing public concerns and cautioned that the use of force would not deter citizens from exercising their political rights. They encouraged Kenyans to remain engaged in democratic processes and continue to defend their rights through elections.
The press statement was signed by James Orengo, Godfrey Osotsi, Edwin Sifuna, Richard Onyonka, Babu Owino, Caleb Amisi, Caroli Omondi, Ojiambo Oundo, Clive Gisairo, Majimbo Kalasinga, Obadia Barongo, Danson Mwashako, Patrick Makau, Joshua Kimilu, Anthony Kibagendi and Julius Mawathe.
The statement also addressed the ongoing hunger situation in Kenya. Leaders are urging the national government to formally declare the famine a national disaster and provide emergency food support, including assistance to schools in affected areas.
