Written by on January 23, 2026

Rulani Mokwena, the head coach of MC Alger, has addressed speculation regarding a potential return to South Africa, particularly links with Kaizer Chiefs. He confirmed discussions with the Algerian club about extending his contract.

MC Alger’s Success Under Mokwena

Rulani Mokwena joined MC Alger in July 2025 and has achieved notable success during his tenure. He led the club to a 1–0 victory over rivals USM Alger in January 2026, securing the Algerian Super Cup. This victory marks the first piece of silverware he has earned outside of South African football.

Currently, MC Alger sits atop the league standings and is competing in the CAF Champions League group stages. The team boasts a strong record of fifteen wins and only two defeats across all competitions, solidifying Mokwena’s reputation as a top-tier continental manager. In the CAF Champions League, the club is third in Group C, having earned one point from their first two matches.

Rulani Mokwena Dismisses Move Back to South Africa

Recent reports have suggested interest from South African clubs, including Kaizer Chiefs, in securing Mokwena’s coaching services. However, the coach has firmly denied any such discussions.

During an interview with Andile Ncube on Sports Night Amplified, Mokwena stated he is content with his current position at MC Alger. He emphasized that negotiations are solely focused on extending his contract with the Algerian side.

Mokwena explicitly denied any conversations about a return to South Africa, stating, “No, no, no. I’m very happy here. I’ve got a contract here, and I’m very, very happy here.” He added, “In fact, the conversations I’m having are with MC Alger for a new contract and to extend my stay here. Those are the only conversations that are taking place.”
