Montenegrin film “The Black Trumpet” by Bojan Stijović presented at the 73rd Pula Film Festival

After its world premiere at the Bishkek International Film Festival in Kyrgyzstan, the Montenegrin feature film “The Black Trumpet”, directed by Bojan Stijović, based on a screenplay by Stefan Bošković, had its European and regional premiere at the 73rd Pula Film Festival, the Film Center of Montenegro announced.

“The Black Trumpet” is, as stated, a thriller that, through dark humor and elements of family drama, follows the story of Maksim Grahovac, a successful writer who, after a decade spent abroad, returns to his hometown of Grahovo to visit his brother Niko and resolve the issue of the family inheritance.

However, the return home turns into a series of unpredictable events that confront the brothers with the consequences of their past and unresolved family debts.

The main roles in the film are played by Momčilo Otašević and Marko Janketić, and the cast also includes Milica Janevski, Strahinja Bubanja, Srđan Grahovac, Vasko Raičević, Gorana Dragašević, Stefan Bošković, Nemanja Dragović, Jovo Petričević, Aleksandar Gilić, Ratka Mugoša, Dejan Jovićević, Nikola Jovićević and Marko Pogačar.

The film’s creative team consists of screenwriter Stefan Bošković, director of photography Dušan Grubin, editor Dmitar Janjušević, set designer Dijana Vučinić, composer Ivan Marović, sound designer Dane Vlaisavljević, and costume designer Lina Leković. The film’s producer is Veliša Popović, while co-producers are Vladan Anđelković, Stefan Bošković, and Boris Raonić.

“It is difficult to imagine a more beautiful place for the European and regional premiere of our film than Pula. After the special experience we had in Bishkek, it was a great pleasure to present “The Black Trumpet” to an audience that shares a similar cultural space, film heritage and sensibility for stories coming from this region. The Pula Film Festival has great significance for all authors from this area and that is why it is important to us that the film’s festival journey began right here.”“, said the film’s screenwriter, actor and co-producer Stefan Bošković.

For Momčilo Otašević, who plays the lead role in the film, the presentation of “The Black Trumpet” in Pula represents an important moment in the life of the film and an opportunity for the story created by the entire crew to find its way to the audience.

“The most beautiful part of a film journey is the moment when the story you created stops being just yours and starts belonging to the audience. Pula was an important stop on that journey for ‘The Black Trumpet’ and I am happy that we had the opportunity to present it to the audience of this festival,” said Otašević.

Film producer Veliša Popović emphasized the importance of presenting Montenegrin film stories on the regional stage and the importance of authentic local motifs finding their way to a wider audience.

“Every presentation of Montenegrin cinema at significant regional festivals is an opportunity to hear about our authors, themes and stories that originate in Montenegro. ‘The Black Trumpet’ is deeply connected to its space and the climate from which it originated, but at the same time it speaks of universal themes that can find their way to audiences of different sensibilities,” said Popović.

As the Film Center adds, a special value in the realization of “The Black Trumpet” is the way in which the film was created. The entire filming took place in the Grahovo area, in the immediate vicinity of the locations that became an integral part of the film’s story. The spaces, objects and props used in the film were found precisely in those places, making the authenticity of the ambience and the spirit of the region itself an important part of the film’s visual identity and atmosphere.

The film “The Black Trumpet” was co-financed by the Film Center of Montenegro, the Film Center of Serbia, and the Radio and Television of Montenegro.
