Nigeria Retain African Flag Football Supremacy, Wins 2 Golds In Kenya

Team Nigeria underlined their status as Africa’s dominant force in flag football after winning two gold medals and a silver at the NFL Flag American Football African Championships in Kenya.

The impressive performance provides a major confidence boost for the Nigerian team as preparations gather pace for the Flag Football World Cup in Germany later this year.

Nigeria successfully defended their continental dominance by claiming gold in the women’s category and the Under-13 mixed event. The men’s team also reached the final but settled for silver after suffering a narrow defeat to Egypt.

Reacting to the achievement, the Director General of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Hon. Bukola Olopade, congratulated the athletes and officials for another outstanding outing, describing flag football as one of Nigeria’s fastest-growing sports with enormous potential.

Olopade praised the leadership of the Nigerian Federation of American Football (NFAF), led by its President, Babajide Akeredolu, for steering the sport to continued success on the continent.

“I want to salute the President of the Nigerian Federation of American Football, Babajide Akeredolu, and his entire board for this great feat. It shows that Nigeria possesses exceptional quality across every aspect of sport, and all we need to do is continue to provide the necessary support to ensure consistent success,” he said.

The NSC boss urged the federation to build on the success in Kenya as attention shifts to the global stage.

“I want to charge the federation to use this tournament as a springboard as the team prepares for the World Cup in Germany later this year. They should be assured that the Commission will continue to support them to ensure they have a successful outing at the World Cup,” Olopade added.

The latest triumph further cements Nigeria’s growing reputation as a powerhouse in African flag football and reinforces optimism that the country can make a significant impact when it competes against the world’s best in Germany later this year.
