A video of former US president Barack Obama discussing democracy has been circulating online since November 2025. The video has been falsely presented as a commentary on Tanzania’s 2025 elections.
Tanzania’s 2025 Elections and Protests
Tanzania held its general election on October 29, 2025. President Samia Suluhu Hassan of the ruling Chama Cha Mapinduzi party was controversially declared the winner with nearly 98% of the vote. This outcome was met with widespread protests, which erupted in several cities. Security forces responded with a violent crackdown, enforcing an internet blackout and a nationwide curfew. Opposition groups alleged hundreds of people were killed. The African Union and Southern African Development Community observers declared the elections neither free nor fair, citing concerns about the disqualification of opposition candidates, increased government repression, and a lack of a fair electoral process.
The Viral Video and Obama’s Speech
The video features Obama speaking passionately about democracy. Text superimposed on the video claims he is “addressing the Tanzania elections.” However, the speech is from a 2018 address at the 16th Nelson Mandela Annual Lecture in Johannesburg, South Africa, delivered on July 17, 2018. Obama was referring to a broader pattern of elections with questionable results, not specifically addressing Tanzania. Examples of such elections around that time included those in Egypt in 2018, Rwanda in 2017, and Equatorial Guinea in 2016.
Misleading Claims and Obama’s Current Activities
There is no evidence that Obama has publicly commented on the 2025 Tanzanian polls. News reports and his social media activities indicate he has been more active in US politics. Presenting the video as a direct response to Tanzania’s situation is misleading, although Obama’s general sentiments about democracy remain relevant.
