Opiyo Wandayi is the current Cabinet Secretary for Energy and Petroleum in Kenya. He assumed this role in 2023 as part of a broad-based government formed after the 2022 general elections.
Prior to his Cabinet appointment, Wandayi served as the Member of Parliament for Ugunja Constituency, beginning in 2013. He was re-elected in 2017 and 2022. During his time in parliament, he was a member of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) and served as the Minority Leader in the National Assembly from 2017 to 2022.
Wandayi’s parliamentary career involved participation in debates concerning energy, infrastructure, and public accounts. He also oversaw State corporations and public expenditure frameworks. Following his initial election in 2013, he focused on accountability and interventions related to governance, public finance management, and infrastructure delivery.
Wandayi received engineering-related training at the University of Nairobi (UoN). He subsequently worked in technical and energy-related sectors before entering politics. His professional background has influenced his policy interests in infrastructure development, energy systems, and technical governance.
Wandayi was born and raised in Siaya County. His upbringing in Western Kenya’s political and socio-economic environment is often noted as influencing his political orientation within ODM. He completed his primary and secondary education in Siaya County before attending the University of Nairobi.
