More than 110,000 protesters gathered in London for a rally led by activists, chanting support for slain American conservative Charlie Kirk and calling for blame to be placed on the left for celebrating his murder. The demonstration, organized by controversial far-right activist Tommy Robinson, aimed to defend free speech and unite the kingdom.

Violent Clashes with Police

The rally, which began peacefully, escalated as protesters moved through the streets around the British parliament. Some protesters assaulted police, resulting in 26 officers sustaining injuries ranging from broken teeth to concussion. Police arrested 25 individuals, with more arrests expected.

Elon Musk’s Address

Billionaire Elon Musk addressed the crowd via video, alleging uncontrolled migration was destroying Britain and blaming left-wing movements for Kirk’s assassination in Utah. He criticized what he termed the “woke mind virus” of the left and called for a dissolution of parliament and a new vote.

Protest Context and Key Figures

The protest, initially planned as a rally for free speech, evolved into a display of support for a British version of the “Make America Great Again” movement. Speakers included right-wing commentator Katie Hopkins and figures from far-right European political parties. Reform UK leader Nigel Farage did not attend, citing Robinson’s criminal convictions.

Police Response and Arrests

The Metropolitan Police deployed 1,000 local officers and 500 additional officers from outlying areas to manage the large crowd. Police are investigating the incident and have made 25 arrests for offenses including affray, violent disorder, assaults, and criminal damage.

Robinson’s Background

Tommy Robinson, whose real name is Stephen Yaxley-Lennon, has a history of legal issues, including five prison terms and a recent jail sentence for contempt of court. He was also arrested in August on allegations of assault, though charges were dropped when the alleged victim declined to press charges.

Further Developments

A rival protest organized by Stand Up To Racism drew at least 5,000 people. Police estimate the total attendance at the Robinson-led rally to be between 110,000 and 150,000. Assistant Commissioner Matt Twist stated that many attendees came with the intent to cause violence, and investigations are ongoing.
