President William Ruto maintains support within the Mt Kenya region despite recent political tensions, according to Githunguri MP Gathoni Wamuchomba. The region played a significant role in Ruto’s 2022 presidential victory.
Gathoni Wamuchomba points to the recent by-election in Mbeere North, where a United Democratic Alliance (UDA) candidate secured a win, as evidence of continued support for President Ruto. She believes these by-election results are indicative of the outcome of the next general election.
Wamuchomba suggests that political influence from the region has led to an inflated sense of importance for Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua. She asserts that the Mt Kenya electorate is prone to shifting allegiances quickly, citing examples of community elders and religious groups altering their stances on Ruto.
Wamuchomba highlights the potential of church establishments within Mt Kenya to mobilize votes for President Ruto. She notes that the president has engaged with various religious groups, pledging support and fostering relationships. Groups such as the Wakurinu and AIPCA have reportedly distanced themselves from opposing factions.
Wamuchomba predicts that President Ruto will receive at least 4 million votes from Mt Kenya in the next election. She believes that the efforts of Deputy President Gachagua to criticize Ruto are inadvertently increasing the president’s popularity within the region.
