Morocco has sentenced 18 Senegalese football fans following disturbances that occurred during the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) final. Senegal’s Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko has criticized the sentencing, echoing sentiments previously expressed by the Senegal Football Association.
The Incident and Arrests
The incidents occurred during the AFCON final in Rabat on January 19. The match was controversially suspended after Senegal players protested a late penalty awarded to the host nation, Morocco. In response, fans attempted to enter the field of play, leading to the arrest of 18 individuals.
Sentencing and Charges
Last Thursday, the 18 fans were sentenced to prison terms ranging from three months to one year, along with fines of up to 5,000 dirhams ($545). They were charged with hooliganism and violence against security officials. The fans have denied any wrongdoing and have not yet appealed the sentences.
Senegalese Response
Senegalese Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko denounced the sentences in parliament, stating that the situation appeared to extend beyond the realm of sport. He emphasized the friendly relationship between Morocco and Senegal and expressed regret over the severity of the penalties. The Senegal Football Association had previously described the sentences as “incomprehensibly harsh.”
Potential Royal Pardon and Transfer of Sentences
Senegal intends to seek a royal pardon from Morocco’s King Mohammed VI. If unsuccessful, Senegal will explore agreements that would allow the supporters to serve their sentences in Senegal.
Legal Representation and Concerns
The defense lawyer for the 18 fans, Patrick Kabou, has described his clients as “victims” and echoed the sentiment that the sentences were “incomprehensible.” He noted that some of the detainees had initiated a hunger strike to protest their detention and treatment.
The Match Outcome
The match resumed after the initial suspension and Senegal ultimately won the final 1-0 in extra time, securing the championship title.
