Sha’Carri Richardson faces speeding charge in Florida

Sha’Carri Richardson, a track and field athlete known for her Olympic achievements, was arrested in Florida on Thursday. She faces a charge related to excessive speeding.
Arrest and Charges
Richardson, 25, was booked into the Orange County Jail on a charge of dangerous excessive speeding, accused of driving 100 mph or more. Bond was set at $500. USA Track and Field and a representative for Richardson have not yet responded to requests for comment.
Previous Legal Matters
In August, Richardson was arrested in Seattle on allegations of assaulting her boyfriend at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport. Following the incident, she issued an apology on social media. The incident report indicated that her boyfriend, Christian Coleman, did not wish to press charges.
In 2021, Richardson received a one-month suspension after testing positive for THC at the U.S. Olympic trials, preventing her from competing in the Tokyo Games.
Florida Speeding Law
Florida’s super speeder law, which went into effect July 1, prohibits driving 50 mph over the speed limit or exceeding 100 mph. A first offense can result in up to 30 days in jail or a $500 fine. Subsequent offenses carry penalties of up to 90 days in jail or a $1,000 fine, and a second conviction within five years can lead to a minimum 180-day driver’s license revocation.
