Somali Embassy hosts Kenya leaders, diplomats for 66th Independence Day celebrations

More than 90 ambassadors accredited to Kenya joined senior government officials, representatives of international organisations, and diplomats as the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Somalia in Kenya marked the 66th anniversary of Somalia’s Independence Day on Saturday evening.

The reception, hosted by the Somali Embassy in Nairobi, brought together ambassadors, heads of international organisations, Cabinet Secretaries from the Government of Kenya and senior officials from different Kenyan government ministries to celebrate Somalia’s national day and reaffirm the relationship between the two neighbouring countries.

During the event, guests were updated on the progress Somalia has made in recent years and the government’s plans for the country’s future.

The discussions focused on ongoing reforms, efforts to strengthen state institutions, and the steps being taken to expand democratic governance.

Somalia’s Ambassador to Kenya, Jabril Ibrahim Abdulle, delivered the keynote address, outlining the government’s achievements and its priorities as the country continues with political and institutional reforms.

“Our country is undergoing significant transformation. We remain committed to strengthening national institutions, expanding the democratic process, and consolidating the gains made in restoring peace and stability. Important progress has been achieved in the constitutional review process as Somalia moves towards implementing one-person, one-vote elections. This is a historic milestone that reflects our commitment to democracy and accountable institutions,” Ambassador Jabril said.

He said the constitutional review process and preparations for one-person, one-vote elections demonstrate Somalia’s commitment to building democratic institutions and ensuring greater accountability in governance.

The ambassador also told guests that Somalia remains focused on strengthening its institutions while continuing efforts aimed at maintaining peace and stability across the country.

Kenya’s Cabinet Secretary for Health, Aden Duale, represented President William Ruto during the celebration and used the occasion to reaffirm Kenya’s commitment to its relationship with Somalia.

Duale said the partnership between the two countries continues to grow and remains important for the development and prosperity of both nations. He added that Kenya remains committed to expanding cooperation with Somalia across areas that benefit the people of both countries.

“Relations between our two countries are at their strongest, and we remain committed to deepening this partnership, particularly through greater cooperation in areas that support the development and prosperity of both nations,” said Duale.

The event also provided an opportunity for diplomats and government officials to interact and discuss issues affecting the region while reaffirming support for continued cooperation between Somalia and Kenya.

Beyond the official speeches, guests experienced Somalia’s cultural heritage through presentations that highlighted the country’s traditions. The reception also featured a selection of traditional Somali dishes, allowing attendees to sample Somali cuisine as part of the Independence Day celebrations.

Somalia celebrates Independence Day on June 1 every year to mark the union of the former British Somaliland and the Trust Territory of Somaliland, which came together to form the Somali Republic. The anniversary remains one of the country’s national celebrations and is observed by Somalis both at home and abroad.
