Somali Woman Held for 10 Days in Kenya on Incitement Charges

Kenyan Court Orders 10-Day Detention of Somali Female Aspirant Over Incitement Allegations

Nairobi, Kenya – A Kenyan court has authorized the detention of Bare Sahara Ahmed, a Somali female political aspirant from Garissa County, for 10 days as authorities investigate allegations of hate speech and incitement to violence. The decision, issued by the Chief Magistrate’s Court at Kahawa Law Courts in Nairobi, was announced on Monday by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI).

Ahmed is currently being held at Kilimani Police Station. Investigators stated that the extended detention period is necessary to thoroughly analyze digital evidence, including call data records and financial transactions, to fully assess the scope of the alleged offenses.

The arrest stems from a video circulating online, purportedly showing Ahmed encouraging retaliation in response to recent violent incidents. Authorities have linked the case to heightened tensions following the killing of a Somali taxi driver in Garissa last week.

The situation initially escalated after a DCI officer allegedly fatally shot the driver at a police roadblock in Modika, sparking protests and widespread anger among residents. Further unrest ensued with a separate attack in Tseikuru, Kitui County, resulting in the deaths of seven individuals.

The DCI emphasized that this investigation underscores their dedication to upholding laws designed to maintain national unity and prevent incitement. A public statement urged citizens to practice restraint in their communications and refrain from actions that could fuel division or hatred.

In response to the escalating tensions, leaders from Garissa and Tana River counties have appealed for calm, cautioning against inflammatory language. A high-level meeting, attended by community elders, religious leaders, elected officials, and security personnel, was held at the Garissa County Commissioner’s compound to de-escalate the situation and prevent further violence.
