Opposition parties in the Western Cape have requested the national government to deploy additional police resources to combat escalating gang violence and crime. Recent statistics indicate 78 murders occurred in the province within a single week. The Democratic Alliance has specifically urged Acting Police Minister Firoz Cachalia to prioritize the deployment of detectives. Concerns have been raised regarding communities feeling unsafe and police facing shortages of vehicles, manpower, and operational support.

Limpopo Mob Killing Investigation

Limpopo police have initiated a manhunt for suspects following a mob killing near Malamulele. The incident occurred at Jerome village, where a man suspected of housebreaking was attacked by a group of individuals. According to provincial police spokesperson Malesela Ledwaba, the victim sustained severe injuries and was transported to a local hospital. He later died from his injuries.

Western Cape Learner Placement Backlog

The Western Cape Department of Education (WCED) is working to resolve outstanding learner placements in the province. Parents continue to queue at regional education offices seeking school placement for their children. The backlog is attributed to factors including population growth, late applications, and limited school capacity. The WCED conducted a survey to identify learners who have not reported to school, allowing for deregistration and the creation of additional spaces. Enrolment data is being analyzed to identify further placement opportunities.

Scholar Transport Concerns After Fatal Crash

The National Association of School Governing Bodies has advised parents to arrange alternative transportation for learners affected by a crackdown on scholar transport operators. This follows a fatal crash in Vanderbijlpark that resulted in the deaths of 14 learners, and the subsequent impoundment of over 100 vehicles. The association has urged schools to develop and enforce scholar transport policies. Criticism has been directed at the Department of Education for a perceived lack of oversight and a reactive approach to ensuring safety.
