Breakthrough Hits and Milestones

• 1991: Kool Moe Dee released his fourth album, Funke, Funke Wisdom on Jive Records. It spawned the singles “Rise ‘N’ Shine” and “How Kool Can One Black Man Be,” which reached No. 1 and No. 9 on the Billboard Hot Rap Songs chart, respectively. The album itself went to No. 19 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart and No. 72 on the Billboard 200.
• 1996: Heather B’s debut album, Takin’ Mine, was released through Pendulum and EMI America. Featuring a sole guest appearance from M.O.P. on “My Kinda N*gga,” the album peaked at No. 14 on the Heatseekers chart and at No. 36 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart.
• 2002: American rapper AZ released his fourth album, Aziatic, with Motown Records. It reached No. 29 on the Billboard 200 and No. 5 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart.
• 2013: Action Bronson dropped his second EP, Saaab Stories, which featured guest performances from Raekwon, Prodigy, and Wiz Khalifa. The project entered the Billboard 200 at No. 63, selling 7,600 copies in its first week. It also performed well in the UK, peaking at No. 4 on the UK R&B Albums chart.
• 2013: Jarren Denton released his debut album, My Grandma’s Basement, under Funk Volume. Supported by the single “Razor Blades and Steak Knives,” it peaked at No. 152 on the Billboard 200, No. 16 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart, No. 28 on the Independent Albums chart, and No. 4 on the Heatseekers Albums chart.
• 2016: Rapper Kodak Black released his fourth mixtape, Lil B.I.G. Pac. With guest appearances by Boosie Badazz, Gucci Mane, and PnB Rock, the project peaked at No. 134 on the Billboard 200 and No. 49 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart.
• 2021: Hip-hop trio Migos dropped their fourth and final album, Culture III. It was the last installment in their Culture trilogy, debuting at No. 2 on the Billboard 200 and reaching No. 2 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart.
• 2021: Pi’erre Bourne dropped his second album, The Life of Pi’erre 5, which featured collaborations with Lil Uzi Vert, Playboi Carti, and Sharc. The album hit No. 17 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart and No. 35 on the Billboard 200. It also reached No. 85 on the Canadian Albums chart.
• 2021: Kodak Black released the EP, Happy Birthday Kodak. The record peaked at No. 180 on the Billboard 200.

Cultural Milestones

• 1987: English rapper Dappy was born in London. He is the lead vocalist of the hip-hop and grime trio N-Dubz, best known for their feature on Tinchy Stryder’s 2009 hit “Number 1,” which reached No. 1 on the UK Singles chart. He has also scored several hits as a solo artist, including “Rockstar,” “Good Intentions,” and “Come With Me.”
• 1993: Pioneering Punjabi rapper Sidhu Moose Wala was born in Moosa, Punjab, India. He has scored the most No. 1 singles on the Billboard India Songs chart. His second album, Moosetape, released independently in May 2021, became the first Indian album to achieve 1 billion streams on Spotify.
• 1995: Nigerian R&B and Afro-beat singer Tems was born in Lagos. She has sold over 25 million records worldwide and amassed numerous accolades, including two GRAMMY Awards, four BET Awards, and four NAACP Image Awards.
• 1997: British R&B singer Jorja Smith was born in Walsall, West Midlands, England. She initially came to mainstream prominence with the release of her debut album, Lost & Found, in June 2018. Featuring the singles “Blue Lights,” “Teenage Fantasy,” “February 3rd,” and “Where Did I Go,” the album debuted at No. 1 on the UK R&B Albums and at No. 3 on the UK Albums chart. It was also nominated for a Mercury Prize.
• 2002: The American singing competition TV series American Idol premiered on the FOX network. It became the most successful and longest-running show of its kind. It would launch the careers of several acclaimed R&B stars, such as Ruben Studdard, Fantasia Barrino, Jordin Sparks, and Candice Glover.
• 2021: Polo G released his third album, Hall of Fame, through Columbia Records. It debuted at the top of the Billboard 200 and the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart. The album also charted within the Top 10 in the U.K., Australia, Belgium, Denmark, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Switzerland, and Sweden.

Industry Changes and Challenges

• 2010: Kid Cudi was arrested in New York for drug possession after a police officer found cocaine in his pocket. He pleaded guilty to the charge and was sentenced to two days of community service.
• 2024: American rapper Enchanting died from drug overdose complications at the age of 26. The Texas-born rapper, who was signed to Gucci Mane’s 1017 Records label, first garnered attention with the song “Track & Field.” The smash hit, featuring fellow American rapper Kaliii, was trending on the internet at the time of her death.
