TotalEnergies CAF Women’s AFCON 2026: Cameroon target redemption as Indomitable Lionesses chase continental glory

After missing the previous edition, Cameroon return to the TotalEnergies CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations Morocco 2026 determined to re-establish themselves among Africa’s elite.

The Indomitable Lionesses, one of the continent’s most successful women’s national teams, secured a place at the expanded 16-team tournament after receiving a second chance through CAF’s revised qualification system.

Now, under newly appointed head coach Valentine Nguele and inspired by emerging midfield star Naomi Eto, Cameroon will be aiming not only to reclaim their place among Africa’s leading nations but also to secure qualification for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

Road to the tournament

Cameroon’s route to Morocco 2026 was anything but straightforward.

The Indomitable Lionesses were eliminated in the final qualifying round after suffering a 3-1 aggregate defeat to Algeria, seemingly ending their hopes of returning to Africa’s biggest women’s football competition.

However, CAF’s decision to expand the tournament from 12 to 16 teams opened the door for four additional nations to qualify based on their FIFA rankings.

Ranked among Africa’s highest-placed teams outside the automatic qualifiers, Cameroon earned one of those places and were handed a lifeline to return to the continental finals.

The Indomitable Lionesses had entered the qualification campaign in the second round after receiving a bye in the opening stage, but now have another opportunity to prove they remain one of African football’s traditional powerhouses.

The coach: Valentine Nguele

Cameroon head into the tournament under new leadership following the appointment of Valentine Nguele on 13 June.

Nguele earned widespread recognition through her outstanding work with FC Ebolowa Girls, transforming the club into one of the dominant forces in Cameroon’s Guinness Super League.

Her tactical discipline, meticulous preparation and ability to build resilient teams helped guide the club through an impressive 16-match unbeaten run, establishing her reputation as one of the country’s leading coaches.

Known for combining demanding standards with strong relationships with her players, Nguele now faces the biggest challenge of her coaching career.

Her appointment also reflects Cameroon’s confidence in home-grown coaching expertise as the federation looks to usher in a new era for the national team.

Naomi Eto (Midfielder)

At just 21 years old, Naomi Eto has rapidly emerged as one of the brightest talents in African women’s football.

The Paris Saint-Germain midfielder, currently gaining valuable experience on loan at Italian side Sassuolo, arrives in Morocco carrying the hopes of a new generation of Cameroonian footballers.

Named Cameroon’s Women’s Player of the Year in 2025, Eto is admired for her intelligence on the ball, creativity, vision and ability to dictate the rhythm of matches from midfield.

Before making the move to Europe, she developed into one of the standout performers in the domestic league with FAP, where her consistent displays marked her out as one of the country’s most complete players.

She is expected to play a central role in Cameroon’s ambitions throughout the tournament.

Cameroon at the Women’s AFCON

Cameroon boast one of the richest histories in the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations.

The Indomitable Lionesses have reached the final on three occasions—in 2004, 2014 and 2016—but are still searching for their first continental title.

Their consistency has also been reflected in three third-place finishes in 2002, 2012 and 2018, giving Cameroon six podium finishes overall.

Only Nigeria and South Africa have accumulated more top-three finishes in the history of the competition, underlining Cameroon’s long-standing status among Africa’s leading women’s football nations.

Although the trophy has so far eluded them, the Lionesses have regularly challenged the continent’s strongest teams and remain one of the most respected sides in African football.
