Trump suggests Iran war is nearing completion

Recent developments indicate ongoing military actions and heightened tensions in the Middle East involving the United States, Israel, and Iran. Oil prices have increased amid regional instability.

U.S. and Israeli Military Actions

U.S. and Israeli forces are conducting strikes in Iran, aiming to curtail the country’s military capabilities and potentially alter its government. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth indicated Tuesday would involve intensified strikes, while also noting a decrease in the pace of Iranian missile launches. Three people have died in Israel from missile strikes over the past two days, and two Israeli soldiers were killed in an attack by Hezbollah forces in southern Lebanon. One of the soldiers killed was from Majdal Shams, a Druze town where twelve children were killed in a Hezbollah rocket attack earlier in 2024.

Statements from Donald Trump

Former President Donald Trump offered conflicting statements regarding the status of the U.S.-Israeli conflict with Iran. He suggested the war was “very complete, pretty much,” while also stating a decision on its conclusion would be “mutual” with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Trump also threatened Iran, stating that any disruption to oil flow through the Strait of Hormuz would result in a response twenty times stronger than previous actions. He told the Times of Israel that he would make the final decision on when the war ends, despite Netanyahu’s input.

Regional and Economic Concerns

Oil prices are rising due to the ongoing instability in the Middle East, impacting U.S. allies who have become targets of Iranian actions. A prominent pro-Israel senator has advised Israel against targeting Iranian oil depots, citing concerns about rising gas prices.

Iranian and Israeli Responses

Iranian officials have declared their intention to continue fighting “as long as it takes,” signaling preparedness for a prolonged conflict. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated on Tuesday that “more is to come” in the war.

Leadership and Political Developments

This week, Iran appointed Mojtaba Khamenei, son of the late supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, as the new supreme leader. Former President Trump expressed disapproval of this appointment, stating he would prefer a different individual in that role.
