A new decade of action will commence in January, building upon the progress of the past ten years to advance the human rights of people of African descent worldwide. The United Nations emphasizes the need for collective action to address racial injustice.
High Commissioner for Human Rights, Mr. Türk, stated that securing the full rights and freedoms of people of African descent requires confronting the legacies of enslavement and colonialism, dismantling systemic racism, and delivering reparatory justice. He also highlighted the importance of elaborating and adopting a draft UN declaration on the respect, protection, and fulfillment of the human rights of people of African descent.
During the initial ten-year period, over 30 countries modified their laws and policies to combat racial discrimination and address specific challenges faced by people of African descent, some for the first time. This included the establishment of the Permanent Forum on People of African Descent and the creation of International Days to celebrate the contributions of the diaspora, including women and girls.
Strong leadership, political will, and increased financial and human resources are considered crucial for achieving recognition, justice, and development for people of African descent. Meaningful participation in policies and decisions affecting their lives is also essential. The UN Human Rights Office (OHCHR) will continue to support concrete and meaningful action.
The OHCHR will continue to work to foster action, supporting the High Commissioner’s Agenda towards transformative change for racial justice and equality, as well as the eight UN human rights anti-racism mechanisms.
