US Gas Exports Rise Amid Economic Shifts and Decarbonization

Thank you for opening the Chartbook email.

US Tariffs and the Fiscal Equation

Tariffs are not a major factor in the US fiscal equation. LNG exporters can readily absorb higher domestic gas costs compared to other consumers due to the higher sale prices of LNG in foreign markets. For example, the average US LNG export sale price in 2025 was roughly $7.87 per thousand cubic feet (MCF), compared to an average of $3.66 per MCF for benchmark Henry Hub prices. This allows exporters to add fees for liquefaction and shipping while still maintaining a profit. The expansion of LNG export capacity is being spurred by high profits recorded by many exporters.

Decarbonizable Industries and Climate Policy

Political scientists often conceptualize climate politics as a struggle between emerging green coalitions and incumbent fossil fuel coalitions. However, this view does not fully explain current conflicts over climate policy. A key group often overlooked is the decarbonizable sector, which includes industries like automakers and energy-intensive manufacturers. These industries can gain competitiveness through decarbonization and are receptive to policies that support their transition, including fiscal policies that de-risk their business.
