USATF Seeks World Athletics Ruling on Half-Marathon Result

The 2026 USATF Half Marathon Championships in Atlanta concluded with a significant course error, impacting the final standings of several leading athletes. The incident has prompted USA Track and Field (USATF) to seek review and a vote from the World Athletics Council.
Race Day Incident
During last Sunday’s race, three leading athletes—Jess McClain, Emma Grace Hurley, and Ednah Kurgat—were directed off course in the final mile due to a course-marking failure. The error occurred at the intersection of Nelson Street and Ted Turner Drive when a police officer, responding to a vehicle striking another officer, left their post, leaving the intersection unmarked. The lead vehicle, following a police motorcycle, mistakenly turned left, leading the runners off the intended route. As a result, McClain finished ninth, while Hurley and Kurgat placed 12th and 13th, respectively.
Selection Criteria and Team Implications
The Publix Atlanta Half-Marathon served as the official selection event for the U.S. team competing in the 2026 World Road Running Championships. USATF’s selection criteria stipulate that the top five finishers are eligible for team selection, with positions offered in ascending order, and subsequently based on world rankings if positions are declined. Currently, Emma Grace Hurley is the only athlete among the three affected runners who holds a qualifying spot through world rankings.
USATF’s Response and World Athletics Review
Following the race, the local organizing committee issued a public apology and awarded prize money to the three affected athletes. USATF initially stated that, according to its rulebook, there was no means to alter the finishing order. However, USATF CEO Max Siegel and the organization have formally requested the World Athletics Council to review the evidence and hold a vote on the outcome.
The World Athletics Council meeting, scheduled for March 18 in Toruń, Poland, will address the request. USATF has submitted an emergency request outlining the situation, and World Athletics has confirmed that a vote will be required.
USATF’s Rationale
Despite maintaining that the results should stand, USATF has sought World Athletics’ input. Siegel stated that dismissing procedures could set a concerning precedent. Furthermore, despite the athletes’ willingness to decline their team spots, USATF believes the top three finishers should be recognized for their efforts. USATF emphasized its responsibility to advocate for athletes and ensure the strongest possible U.S. team participates in world championship events.
