India secured victory in the Under-19s World Cup, defeating England in a match highlighted by a record-breaking performance from Vaibhav Suryavanshi. The 14-year-old batsman scored 175 runs off just 80 balls, the highest score ever recorded in an ICC tournament final at either youth or senior level.
Vaibhav Suryavanshi’s innings was a display of remarkable power hitting. He amassed 150 runs through boundaries alone, including 15 sixes and 15 fours, in Harare. His scoring rate was particularly impressive, with 151 runs coming from just 56 deliveries. Suryavanshi’s tally of 15 sixes represents the most ever recorded in a youth one-day international (ODI) innings, surpassing his own previous record of 14 against the United Arab Emirates. He finished with a strike rate of 218.75.
Suryavanshi was eventually dismissed caught behind off Manny Lumsden for 175, with India at 251-3. The team ultimately reached a total of 411-9 from their 50 overs. England, despite Caleb Falconer’s quick century of 115 off 67 balls – their fastest ever youth-international century – were bowled out 100 runs short.
Following the match, Suryavanshi dedicated the player of the match and tournament awards to his team and support staff. He emphasized the team’s focus on process and natural gameplay, attributing their success to extensive preparation during the Asia Cup and the preceding months. Suryavanshi expressed confidence in his abilities to contribute in crucial matches.
Suryavanshi has already established a notable career despite his young age. He plays for the Rajasthan Royals in the Indian Premier League (IPL), where he became the youngest player to score a T20 century, achieving a 35-ball century against the Gujarat Titans. This was the second-fastest T20 century in IPL history. In July, he scored a 52-ball century against England in a youth ODI, and in November, he made 144 off 42 balls against the UAE in an Asia Cup Rising Stars T20 fixture. He has now hit 10 or more sixes in a youth ODI on five occasions, more than all other batters combined.
England captain Thomas Rew acknowledged the difficulty in containing Suryavanshi’s aggressive batting. He noted that despite research and attempts to use change-ups, the team struggled to restrict his scoring.
Vaibhav Suryavanshi concluded the tournament as the leading run scorer with 439 runs at an average of 62.71. India’s victory marks their record sixth Under-19s World Cup title, while England’s wait to win the trophy continues.
India captain Ayush Mhatre praised Suryavanshi’s exceptional innings, recognizing his talent and the impact he had on the match.
