A suspected attempt to smuggle heroin into Kenya was foiled at the Isebania One Stop Border Post (OSBP) in Migori County after a police sniffer dog detected the concealed drugs in a traveller’s luggage.

In a viral video shared by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) on X, the suspect, identified as a 29-year-old Taiwanese national Wang Hsiang-hui, is seen undergoing routine entry clearance after arriving from neighbouring Tanzania.

He stood alongside other foreign nationals.

The widely circulated clip, seen by TNX Africa, shows a trained drug-detection K9 suddenly stopping beside one of the suspect’s bags, alerting its handler to the possible presence of narcotics.

The officer then pulls the luggage aside for further inspection.

According to the DCI, detectives from the Anti-Narcotics Unit immediately searched the bag and recovered 26 carefully wrapped capsules containing a brown powdery substance weighing approximately 18.26 grams.

Preliminary tests confirmed the substance was heroin.

The suspect was arrested on the spot and remains in police custody pending formal processing and arraignment.

The recovered narcotics have been secured as evidence.

Following the operation, the DCI reaffirmed its commitment to combating cross-border drug trafficking and other transnational crimes.

“The Directorate of Criminal Investigations remains steadfast in its fight against drug trafficking and other transnational crimes, working closely with partner agencies to safeguard Kenya’s borders and protect communities from the devastating effects of narcotic drugs,” the agency said.

The agency also urged members of the public to report suspected criminal activity through its toll-free hotlines as part of ongoing efforts to curb cross-border crime.
