WAFCON 2026: Kenya Return with Renewed Purpose, Target Strong Start – Africa Top Sports

After a decade-long absence from continental competition, Kenya women’s national football team have arrived in Morocco for the TotalEnergies CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations 2026 with a sense of purpose rather than apprehension.

The Harambee Starlets are determined to rewrite their WAFCON story, leaving behind the painful memories of their debut campaign at the 2016 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, where they exited the tournament after three consecutive defeats. This time, the mood within the squad is markedly different, shaped by growth, experience, and a new generation of players.

At the center of this transformation is head coach Beldine Odemba, one of the few women leading a senior national team in African football. She has placed her faith in a youthful squad that already carries exposure to football’s biggest stages.

“These young players bring unique experience to our football. They have already played in a World Cup, they know the demands of the highest level,” Odemba said, underlining the maturity within her ranks.

Kenya’s opening test could hardly be more demanding, with a clash against the host nation awaiting them. Yet rather than viewing it as a setback, Odemba sees opportunity.

“To grow, you have to face the best. Playing the host nation right from the start is a privilege. We want to get off to a good start and we are ready.”
