Western Kenya May Get Two-Tier Health Facilities

The Ministry of Health has begun planning for the construction of two Level VI referral hospitals, one in Bungoma County and the other in Kericho County. A feasibility study brief has been released to evaluate the potential of these projects, which aim to improve healthcare access in the Western and South Rift regions.
The government’s initiative seeks to advance Universal Health Coverage (UHC) by decentralizing tertiary healthcare services. Currently, residents of these regions often face long journeys to Eldoret or Nairobi for specialized medical care.
Strategic Viability Assessment
The feasibility study will comprehensively assess the technical, financial, economic, environmental, legal, institutional, and operational aspects of establishing Level VI facilities. These hospitals are envisioned as leading referral centers, featuring advanced diagnostic imaging, oncology units, and intensive care wards.
The project is expected to generate employment opportunities for local communities both during and after construction. The hospitals are also planned to function as teaching institutions, contributing to the training of medical specialists. Environmental considerations, including sustainable medical waste management, will be a priority, particularly in ecologically sensitive areas.
Addressing Healthcare Disparities
The current healthcare system’s dependence on Kenyatta National Hospital and Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital has placed a significant burden on national resources. The inclusion of Bungoma and Kericho is intended to address this geographical imbalance.
Healthcare stakeholders in the targeted counties have expressed support for the initiative, emphasizing the importance of transparent procurement processes and sustained political commitment for successful implementation. The new facilities are intended to improve access to high-quality healthcare across Kenya.
