Wisconsin tribes seek action on sports betting legislation

Tribal leaders in Wisconsin have again requested state lawmakers to approve legislation authorizing mobile sports betting managed by federally recognized tribes. The appeal was made during the annual State of the Tribes address.

Tribal Leaders Advocate for Sports Betting Bill

Tribal leaders urged the Legislature to advance a bill permitting online sports wagering under tribal control. Nicole Boyd, chairwoman of the Red Cliff Band of Lake Superior Chippewa Indians, specifically requested approval of the pending legislation, stating it would benefit Wisconsin.

Proposed Legislation Details

The proposed bill would legalize online sports betting platforms exclusively operated by Wisconsin’s tribes. FanDuel and DraftKings, among other commercial sportsbook operators, would be prohibited from offering services under the bill’s framework.

Legislative Consideration

Representative Mark Born, R-Beaver Dam, indicated that legislative leaders are considering bringing the measure to a vote. He expressed hope that the bill would be brought to the floor for a vote.

Governor’s Stance and Required Process

The bill requires passage in both chambers of the Legislature before being sent to Governor Tony Evers for consideration. Evers has previously suggested he would likely sign sports betting legislation into law, despite some opposition.

Opposition and Concerns

National sportsbook operators have voiced opposition to the tribal-only framework outlined in the current proposal. Assembly Speaker Robin Vos addressed the issue last month, stating he does not believe online gambling is beneficial. He also raised concerns about competitive parity between Wisconsin tribes and operators in other jurisdictions.

Ongoing Review

Lawmakers have not established a definitive timeline for floor action. The proposal remains under legislative review.
