Amazon has expanded the availability of Alexa+, its enhanced digital assistant, to all users in the United States. The service, featuring generative artificial intelligence capabilities, was initially released in an early access preview last March, requiring a waitlist or purchase of newer devices.
Alexa+ Availability and Pricing
Alexa+ is now available for a monthly subscription fee of $19.99. Prime members retain complimentary access to the service, and a limited free trial is accessible through the Alexa+ website and app. Amazon indicated that usage of the free experience will be restricted.
User Engagement and Features
According to Amazon, tens of millions of users are currently utilizing Alexa+. Vice President of Alexa and Echo, Daniel Rausch, stated that user engagement has increased significantly, with users having two to three times more conversations with the service compared to previous iterations. Alexa+ is designed to handle multiple queries simultaneously and act as an agent, performing tasks such as scheduling repairs or booking transportation.
Recent Updates and AI Competition
Recently, Amazon began automatically upgrading some Prime members to Alexa+, which resulted in some user feedback. Users can revert to the classic Alexa service via voice command. Amazon is actively overhauling Alexa in response to the growing popularity of AI chatbots like ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude.
Evolution of Alexa
The original Alexa, launched in 2014, gained popularity for its voice-activated digital assistant capabilities, primarily accessed through Amazon’s Echo smart speaker. With Alexa+, Amazon has prioritized a website and app interface, mirroring the user experience of other popular chatbots that are often accessed through web browsers or smartphone applications.
