Arusha Confirms Afcon 2027 Bid East Africa Prepares

The Arusha Region in Tanzania is preparing to host matches during the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon). Regional officials have stated that the region is entering a decisive phase of readiness, focusing on infrastructure development and organizational planning.
On February 4, 2026, Regional Commissioner Amos Makalla addressed local officials, outlining the region’s preparations for the tournament.
Stadium Construction Progress
Construction of the Samia Stadium is over 74 percent complete and is scheduled for completion and commissioning in July. The stadium is being built to meet the requirements of the Confederation of African Football (Caf) and FIFA. The Arusha International Football Stadium in Olmot Ward, designed for 32,000 spectators, is also under construction. The project is valued at over Sh300 billion.
Operational Committees
Seven specialized committees are planned to oversee key operational areas for the tournament. These committees will focus on security, protocol and reception, media and communications, health and sanitation, entertainment and accommodation, infrastructure and transport, and tourism and hospitality. The Regional Administrative Secretary has been instructed to expedite the formation of these committees, which will report directly to Makalla’s office.
Economic and Tourism Impact
Officials view Afcon 2027 as an opportunity to enhance Arusha’s international profile, attract investment, stimulate tourism, and increase foreign exchange earnings. Local leaders are encouraged to collaborate to ensure effective execution and a positive global reputation for Tanzania. Longido District Commissioner Salum Kali emphasized the importance of early and coordinated planning to maximize the economic and social benefits of the event.
Regional Collaboration and Concerns
Afcon 2027 will be jointly hosted by Tanzania, Kenya, and Uganda, aiming to strengthen regional cooperation and boost economic activity across East Africa. Sports analyst John Kiaze cautioned the host nations to meet international standards and suggested organizing test competitions to identify and address potential issues before formal inspections. Arusha Urban Member of Parliament Paul Makonda stated the project is expected to generate employment, invigorate service sectors, expand tourism, and attract long-term capital.
