Abhinav Bindra, the celebrated Indian shooter, has concluded his eight-year term as vice chair of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Athletes’ Commission. The transition occurred during the ongoing Winter Olympics in Italy.
Humphrey Kayange, a Kenyan rugby player, will be taking over Bindra’s position on the commission.
Bindra, India’s first individual Olympic gold medalist from the 2008 Beijing Games, shared his sentiments regarding his time on the commission via ‘X’. He expressed gratitude for the opportunity to represent athletes globally, emphasizing the importance of prioritizing their voices and concerns within the Olympic Movement. Bindra noted that every decision was guided by the belief that athletes should remain central to the Olympic Movement.
Bindra commended his fellow commission members, describing them as extraordinary individuals dedicated to strengthening athlete representation. He expressed pride in their collective accomplishments and conveyed optimism for the future of athlete representation, citing the dedication of current members.
The 19-member IOC Athletes’ Commission undertakes a range of responsibilities. These include participating in the evaluation process for candidate Olympic host cities, monitoring the organization of the Games, addressing doping concerns, and developing training and education programs, particularly for women.
