CAF rejects reports of expanded 2027 Africa Cup of Nations

Thursday 23 July 2026 – 22:49

CAF has confirmed that the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations will retain its 24-team format, rejecting reports that the tournament could be expanded.

CAF president Patrice Motsepe said at a press conference on Wednesday that the competition would proceed with 24 national teams when Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania jointly host the tournament from June 19 to July 17, 2027.

Qualifying matches are due to continue from September 2026.

The continental body separately launched a tender for the global commercial rights to the 2028, 2032 and 2036 editions, covering broadcasting, media, sponsorship and marketing. Bids will close on August 24.

CAF said the 2025 tournament in Morocco attracted a cumulative television audience of more than 3.2 billion and six billion digital views, making it the third-largest national-team football event globally after the World Cup and European Championship.
