Patrice Motsepe, President of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), has stated the organization’s goal is to develop East Africa into a leading football region on the continent. This ambition was highlighted in connection with the decision to award the hosting rights for the Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) 2027 to Tanzania, Kenya, and Uganda.
CAF’s Vision for East Africa
Motsepe explained that CAF’s decision to award the Afcon 2027 finals to Tanzania, Kenya, and Uganda was strategic and developmental, extending beyond logistical considerations. The organization aims to leverage the tournament as a catalyst to accelerate football growth in East Africa, enabling the region to compete with established footballing nations from West, North, and Southern Africa. CAF hopes to see countries from East Africa consistently compete at the highest level in Africa.
Recognition of National Teams
Motsepe specifically praised Tanzania’s national team, the Taifa Stars, noting a significant improvement in performance, organization, and belief during the 2025 Afcon finals. He anticipates continued growth and quality from the team in the future. He also commended the commitment and fighting spirit demonstrated by Uganda’s players, emphasizing its importance for long-term success. While Kenya did not participate in the 2025 Afcon, Motsepe expressed confidence in their ability to rise to the occasion as co-hosts in 2027.
Development Beyond Competition
CAF intends to use Afcon 2027 to strengthen football structures, administration, and youth development systems throughout East Africa. Improved infrastructure, increased competition exposure, and enhanced player confidence are expected to collectively elevate the region’s football standards. The joint hosting of Afcon 2027 is viewed by CAF as a demonstration of trust in East Africa’s potential and a defining moment that could reshape the region’s football landscape.
