Kenya’s manufacturing sector may see significant changes following announcements from China’s Two Sessions. Beijing has committed to becoming a leading export destination and implementing zero-tariff policies for 53 African countries, including Kenya.
China’s Trade Commitments
During the fourth session of the 14th National People’s Congress, Chinese Commerce Minister Wang Wentao emphasized China’s commitment to opening its market and boosting global trade cooperation. China has been the world’s second-largest merchandise trade importer for over a decade, demonstrating its capacity as a global trade hub. The country plans to launch over 100 “Export to China” events and implement a tailored “one-country, one-strategy” approach to support partner nations.
Zero-Tariff Policy for African Exports
Starting May 1, Kenya and 52 other African nations with diplomatic ties to China will benefit from zero tariffs on exports. This policy aims to enhance the competitiveness of Kenyan products, reduce export costs, and facilitate market access within China’s large consumer base. Kenyan agricultural and industrial products, including tea, coffee, and horticultural goods, are expected to benefit.
Tailored Support for Partner Nations
China’s approach includes customized support for individual partner nations, addressing their unique strengths and challenges. This “one-country, one-strategy” plan will focus on upgrading capacity, streamlining logistics, and ensuring products meet Chinese market standards.

The opening of China’s market provides Kenya with a stable alternative for export diversification and reduces reliance on volatile commodity prices.
