Two-time Olympian Samuel Ikpefan recently concluded his campaign in cross-country skiing at the Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics, representing Nigeria as the country’s sole athlete and national flagbearer. Following his participation, Ikpefan has advocated for increased institutional and financial support to foster the growth of winter sports across Africa.
Ikpefan’s experience at the Games underscored both the possibilities and obstacles confronting African athletes in winter sports. He noted that competing at the Olympics demonstrates what can be achieved, while simultaneously revealing the difficulties faced by athletes from the continent.
The skier detailed that his journey to the Olympics involved considerable personal sacrifice. He explained that he worked multiple jobs to finance his training and competition schedule.
Despite these challenges, Ikpefan expressed confidence in Africa’s ability to compete on the global winter sports stage with appropriate support. He believes there is significant untapped potential across the continent and that many athletes could reach the highest levels of competition.
Ikpefan emphasized the need for sustainable systems that encompass athlete education, infrastructure development, and financial backing. He specifically called for investment in training programs, coaching, and long-term athlete development.
Ikpefan also urged international sports bodies to collaborate with African federations to expand opportunities for winter athletes. He believes these organizations can play a crucial role in supporting the growth of winter sports in Africa.
Ikpefan remains optimistic about the future of winter sports in Africa. He concluded that by establishing the right structures, African nations can cultivate competitive winter athletes and secure a lasting presence in these sports.
