The AFCON 2027 chairman has reassured the public that Kenya remains committed to its hosting responsibilities despite concerns over funding. Nicholas Musonye has dismissed reports suggesting delays in Kenya’s payment of hosting fees for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
Hosting Fees and Parliamentary Rejection
Kenya is co-hosting the tournament alongside Uganda and Tanzania, with the latter two having already settled their required payments. Kenya is expected to remit KSh 3.5 billion by April. Recent speculation arose after the Kenyan Parliament rejected a Ministry of Sports proposal to increase the hosting budget by an additional KSh 4 billion. This sparked debate regarding the country’s ability to secure the necessary funds. Concerns are amplified by Kenya’s past experience in 2018, when it was stripped of the rights to host the African Nations Championship (CHAN) due to delays in stadium renovations and infrastructure issues.
Musonye Addresses Funding Concerns
Nicholas Musonye has sought to reassure stakeholders that Kenya remains committed to meeting its obligations and successfully co-hosting AFCON 2027. He stated that the Ministry of Sports is working on the funding and that Kenyans should not worry, as the government is committed to honoring its obligations.
Ticketing Framework and Lessons from Morocco
Musonye indicated that Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania are considering adopting a centralized ticketing system, similar to the one used in Morocco, where CAF directly managed ticket distribution and accreditation. He explained that this approach proved efficient, minimizing complications and providing a smooth experience for supporters. He suggested that Kenya is considering using CAF to manage ticketing and accreditation, mirroring the successful model implemented in Morocco. Musonye expressed confidence that this approach will prevent issues encountered during the 2024 African Nations Championship and ensure fans can access tickets conveniently.
